Madras Whale Watching

DSC_0163
Earlier this month in Cape Town we traveled to the coastal town of Hermanus, nicknamed the "whale-watching capital of the world." Although there were no whales (they don't come during this time of year) we still had fun taking in the views, snapping pictures and browsing the nearby craft market. Again my outfit is by no means one of my greatest fashion ensembles. On my feet I'm wearing my Merrell Barefoot Glove slip-on shoes I bought at L.L. Bean. At first I was skeptical of their look but they have been perfect for stepping over slippery rocks and walking on the beach.

Cape Town Backdrop

DSC_0540
With Table Mountain as a backdrop, Cape Town by far has the most beautiful views of any city I have ever visited. Every morning from my hotel room I would wake up to find the mountain safely watching over me and the entire city. One of our days we had lunch in the city's botanical gardens near the Cape Town parliamentary building. I couldn't resist taking some photos in front of the sprawling greens with the mountain in the background. Again you'll find me with my trusty Target backpack (perfect for holding all my souvenirs) and wearing jewelry bought at different African craft markets.

South African Safari

DSC_0440

The day we went on a safari was my favorite day out of my entire month abroad in South Africa. Being out in the open surrounded by wild animals and the picturesque landscape really put into perspective for me that I was in Africa. Many of the South African towns we visited had the same amenities and features as U.S. cities so being out in the country was a treat. My favorite animals by far were the rhinos. There were four all together: three sisters and one baby. I couldn't believe how close our safari guide was able to get us to the animals. That day was a day I will never forget.

One of our days in Johannesburg we spent touring the South African Apartheid Museum. I definitely recommend it if you are in Johannesburg. South Africa has had a difficult past but it was inspiring to see the history and learn about the people who triumphed over their oppression. Prior to touring the museum we had a lunch at a nearby casino. I didn't play any games but I did get a chance to take some pictures outside. I'm wearing a Forever21 dress with a necklace I bought at an African craft market. I've bought sooooo much jewelry here but I just can't help myself! Everything is so cheap and unique!

This entire month of studying abroad in South Africa I have definitely not been at the top of my game when it comes to dressing nice and wearing makeup. On the regular you can find me in shorts and a tee plus a ton of sunscreen and tinted moisturizer. But honestly it's been a nice change from my normal routine of meticulously putting together outfits along with accessories and makeup. I've literally been wearing this J. Crew denim top EVERYWHERE. No lie this is probably the sixth time I've worn it in these photos. It is perfect for layering, which is needed in Johannesburg's constantly changing weather.

One afternoon in Cape Town we traveled to a nearby winery for a tasting. It was my first one and I ended up really enjoying it. I didn't buy any wine (kind of regretting that decision now), but I had a wonderful chatting with friends and sampling the local flavor. Not to mention the great scenery for photo-ops. I leave South Africa in a week! I'm going to be sad to go but I'm sure by then I'll be ready to be home in the states.

Local Purchases

My days here in Cape Town have been busy, but not busy enough where I can't shop. One of my goals coming to Africa was to buy jewelry, particularly handmade jewelry. I picked up this necklace and these bracelets for under $20 all together. The South African rand is worth so little compared to the U.S. dollar so I can get so much more for my money here. I'm loving my time here and am dreading the day when I have to come home!

Welcome to Cape Town

Hi everyone! I've arrived safe and sound in Cape Town for the first leg of my journey! My first day was rough. Jet lag and dehydration got the best of me so I spent my first hours puking and sick. Thankfully my illness has passed and I've finally gotten the chance to enjoy the city. Our first day we climbed Table Mountain (I rode up in the cable car) and today we toured a few museums and visited Greenmarket Square,  one of Cape Town's most famous marketplaces. I bought a few knickknacks and bartered for the first time. Nick was a huge help because numbers and money conversions are definitely not my thing! Unfortunately I'm not sure I'll be able to upload any vlog videos while I'm here. The Internet connection is slow and I'm surprised I'm even getting this blog post up! Hopefully I'll be able to blog once or twice a week while I'm here!

Comfortable Beginnings

DSC_0197
My last few days at home before leaving for South Africa I decided to keep it casual and comfy. When I'm spending time with family, just lounging around, I see no reason to dress up. My go-to outfit for laid back days would have to be leggings and a loose top. I added in the scarf for a pop of color!

I'm currently en route to Cape Town, South Africa! I'm so excited to experience the city and South Africa's vibrant culture. If you've ever traveled to South Africa let me know any tips or places I should go!
