When transitioning from suburban living to city living it's important to have items suited to your environment. Having interned in NYC during the summers in college I know how important it is to have certain necessities on you at all times - it's not like you can just hop in your car and go home for something you forget!
Comfy and quality shoes are a must for me in NYC. On the commute I like to wear comfy flats (like TOMS) and carry my nice heels in my tote bag. Headphones, an umbrella and a matches-with-everything cardigan are also of vital importance. I've gotten caught in an NYC rainstorm before and it's not pretty. I also like to wear headphones to discourage creepy men from talking to me on the subway. Another must? A map. Since I'm not an NYC native and can sometimes be directionally-challenged, a map is 100% necessary for me.
Other important items? A water bottle, snack bars, breath mints, cash, hair ties and a magazine or book.
